Energy -- "real" needs

I wonder how much energy used is "real" need vs. "frivolous" use.

We hear a lot about commuting and car pooling but as I look at energy use a lot
of travel is not productive and has a negative or zero return.

I am thinking about vacations, trips to relatives (I wonder how much energy
has been used by parents constant whine "when am I going to see you again"),
recreational boating, aviation, consumer sports attendance, etc.

At least in Los Angeles, weekend traffic is often worse that workday traffic.
