I think it's because film makers keep assuming that their audiences will
not understand that which is outside their own personal experiences
(including future tech) unless it is made the focus of the film. This
is demonstrably untrue; while stuff has to be explained, focussing is
often going overboard in this explanation (witness, say, Babylon 5's
technomage episode, and the technomage in the spinoff, as an even better
example of this than Demolition Man).
