I don't know its origin, it is part of the Bryce 4 presets. I think it
was modelled by hand, but I'm not sure.

I like L-systems, they are so useful for making fun organic shapes and
creatures. Although what I would really want is a cellular simulator
like Kurt Fleischer's
(http://www.gg.caltech.edu/~kurt/Devsim/thesis-images.html).
