I mean, I'm all into being a machine-intelligence Diasporan with a
billion-year expected lifespan (with backups) and a tendency to view
supernovae as fun fireworks. But that's then. At the moment our lives are
pretty tied to Earth's ecosystem, and vulnerable to our own poisons; I see no
wisdom in treating Earth cavalierly before we have well-established
alternatives, just because preserving it may take some collective action and a
bit of group coercion.

Not that I expect to want to dispose of Earth after said alternatives. But
even if you do... don't count your nanotech miracles until they've decanted.
