This is my preferred method for uploading. I would have no doubts
that the resulting mechanism is "me". It avoids the duplicate person
problem, because there is only one person at a time. It also doesn't
terminate one of the entities as part of the upload.

Yes, this is a problem. Backups are *replacement* copies. They
don't help at all if the original does not want to be deleted and
replaced.
