Yet another explanation of the paradox is that ET has already been
through this solar system and consumed the earth. But they found its
native lifeforms interesting enough to pop us into a VR to see how we
would come out. They decided to omit themselves (and other advanced
races) from the VR.
My most likely scenario is that we are in a protected bubble until we've
had time to work out our destiny and we are only beginning to become
capable of detecting the real activities of the advanced species anyway.
