I understand the mesh does not stop all the microwave radiation from escaping. To fully stop the radiation, the oven would become heavy, ugly, and the owner would not see the minced dead cow in there.

The governments have declared the radiation level harmless, so one may ignore it unless one cranks up one's paranoia circuits.
