The word zen derives from "dhyana" a sanskrit word meaning meditation. Bodhidharma took Buddha's dhyana to China, where it became known as "chan." When monks introduced it to Japan, the pronunciation underwent yet another transformation, becoming "zen."
Taoism comes from a blend of Buddhism and Confucianism as cooked by Lao Tzu.
