Certainly it might be so. But as in all natural selection, those AI's that has that meme/goal will soon get exctinct, and the others will live on.

Therefore it will not be a very long lasting meme in the memepool. The individual AI might die, but the "system/ecosphere" of AI's will not be affected much.

(You might want to read "The Selfish Gene" by Richard Dawkins, which should send your mind in the right direction)
