This year I missed the Persig Showers which occur mid-August. I was disappointed because it is an annual event I enjoy very much. When I recently received a Cosmology newsletter that included information about the Great Leonid Meteor Storm, my enthusiasm for another opportunity this year picked up.

On Tuesday, November 17, the Earth will cross the orbit of Comet Tempel-Tuttle, which will sweep up thousands of tons of comet debris made up of tiny particles of comet dust and grit and will produce a celestial fireworks extravaganza of "epic proportions in Earth's upper atmosphere."

We may be able to view in dark skies as many as 100-300 meteors an hour between 12:00 a.m. midnight on Monday 11/16 till dawn on Tuesday 11/16.
