An interesting aspect of the newly-released independent film 'Pi' relates to the manner in which it was filmed. Aranofsky, the director, intended to create a sharp contrast between the subjectivity and objectivity--the subjectivity of the mathematician's mental processes and the world around him versus the objectivity of the mathematical struture he was attempting to impose on his world. Therefore, the production crew made the decision to film in 'black or white', which is different from 'black and white' in that there are no grey tones in the film. This style also harkens back to the early days of sci-fi.
