We tend to forget that Buddhism usually took *many* years to become
assimilated into new cultures. We are only now beginning, for instance,
to start getting a handle on translating Buddhist texts. This is
probably faster than it took for the Chinese, say, to get to this level
(if I remember correctly), but it has still taken a while. (Why did we
expect it to be different?, is the interesting question.)
