There is a system already out there for tall buildings. It releases a
long net tube that extends to the ground. You jump into the tube and as
you drop further and further, the tube stretches and tightens around
you, slowing you down till you reach bottom. I've seen demonstrations of
the system and it is very very cool, it could be used on a regular basis
in evacuation drills as well.
