No doubt there's a real desire for endless sex with virgins etc.,
though a friend claimed to me the other day that there's also a
strong blackmail component motivating those actually chosen to be
suicide bombers: carry out this mission, or we torture and execute
you and your family.

I hadn't heard of this in the context of Islamic terrorism before,
but it certainly sounds right. Anyone know if blackmailing of
chosen "martyrs" is commonplace?
