It is honest. Although I guess it will not calm people who have a
fundamental dislike for such projects.

A serious answer to the question what we need the processing power for
is that we will invent new uses as it becomes available. The first
computers were useful for calculating mathematical tables, and just
barely doing some useful math calculations. Then they became able to do
mathematical calculations - and some simple simulations and
administrative software. Then they became good at it, and people started
doing graphics. When graphics was easy, internetworking and AI began to
be partially possible. For every step, we solve the old bottlenecks and
discover new useful things to do which are just a bit too hard - so we
develop more powerful computers.
