Why is it that employment in the U.S. remains relatively
stable? (In fact, it absorbs huge numbers of people into
jobs that might otherwise go undone, e.g., picking strawberries.)

I'm growing skeptical that in the *near* future, lots of
people will find themselves without jobs. What will be
the first signs of this development?
