Probably "self-selected sample" is the best excuse. To be
an intellectually honest argument, you would have to look at
ALL or a randomly selected sample of nations, have some
a priori measurement of "societal freedom" and "poverty",
and draw a correlation. The US and Australia aren't really
that different in either regard. And "visible" is not a
criterion I would use at all: hungry is hungry; if they
exist, it is better than we can see them.
