I agree. Glorified Nintendo action wears thin pretty quickly.
As you suggest, I also think that it would be wicked cool if the robots
were totally autonomous i.e. only had an on/off switch and no manual
controls. Having machines that operated on programmed (and particularly
adaptive) behaviors would make the event far more academically interesting
and less predictable.
