There were two movies based on 1984, both called 1984. The first was, I
think, in ~1956 and starred Edmund O'Brien. The 2nd was made 'on
location' in both time and space and starred John Hirt.
AFAIR the 2nd was much closer to the book, early on it seemed almost
paragraph-for-paragraph like the book. I think the 2nd was also Richard
Burton's last film.
