My suggestion is to tell your editor "boffin" should stay as is. I
personally find it refreshing to run across a new word or turn of
phrase. If I can not deduce the meaning from the context or the
composition of the word then I can always consult a dictionary.
This is one of the reasons that it is usually more interesting to
be looking at a copy of The Economist than Time or Newsweek.
