The Digital sky survey is going to accumulate massive ( many terabytes) of
data. Fermi Lab in Batavia IL is a key sponsor of the project, handeling the
massive data storage and manipulation. They are experts, since the large
particel collider detectors also produce many terabytes of data.
As these massive data projects proceed, we get closer to data storage
equivalent to what is necessary for uploading human consciousness. It is a
vital bridge technology.
