This is a good example of how an idea can look really good on paper, but would
turn into a hideous disaster in the real world.

If you want to keep a couple of reasonably free, safe countries with enough
technological progress to allow us to eventually become transhuman, you should
fight for /strict/ immigration policies, not free ones. There's nothing wrong
with immigration per se, and well-educated people of good will should by all
means be welcomed no matter where they're from, but just throwing open your
borders amounts to suicide in a world where the (desperate) "poor" so heavily
outnumber the "rich".
