A big area is of course biotechnology in the sense of using modified
bacteria to produce substances, for example insulin (instead having to
dissolve a lot of pancreases from cattle), interferon, erythropoeitin,
growth hormone and other pharmaceuticals. This has lowered the costs
quite a bit, making treatment affordable for many.
