In the context in which this was asked (i.e., why do people feel free
to ignore the "experts" in the two fields), I think the common thread
is that the average Joe gets to see the experts in both fields fail
miserably, and often. Even when those failures are just the luck of
the draw from good decisions, it still looks like incompetence, so it
makes us feel like we could do better.
