The concept is a generalisation of the use of 'real' (as opposed to
'unreal' or 'ersatz'): "this is real cream" (as opposed to ersatz cream).
As a generalisation it tends to be synonymous with 'the objective', i.e.
it distinguishes what exists from what we think exists (obviously, these
may not be the same thing!). So reality is whatever exists.
