New Jersey Sustainable State Institute
Founding Executive Director
The New Jersey Sustainable State Institute (NJSSI) seeks an
entrepreneurial founding Executive Director. NJSSI is a new cooperative
venture of New Jersey Institute of Technology and Rutgers, The State
University of New Jersey, with initial funding from the State of New Jersey.
Its primary purpose is to produce an updated set of goals and indicators,
and new targets that describe and track progress toward a "Sustainable
State." NJSSI will build upon the strong foundation provided by previous
efforts of this type in New Jersey, including Living with the Future in Mind
I and II, and Governing with the Future in Mind. Other important roles of
the Institute are to: (a) communicate with citizens, firms, the press, and
others about the challenges faced by New Jersey in trying to become a
sustainable state; (b) perform research on gaps in our knowledge of
sustainability; and (c) advise on public policy.
The Executive Director will manage this highly consultative activity and
also build the new institution into a respected, continuing presence in New
Jersey. The Executive Director will report to the Board of Governors of the
NJSSI, and will be appointed to the staff of either Rutgers or NJIT as s/he
prefers. Work location is negotiable. Desired qualifications of the
Executive Director include an advanced degree in public policy or a related
scientific or technical field, five or more years of relevant work
experience in the field of sustainability including management
responsibilities, superior verbal and written communication skills,
familiarity with performance-based management using goals and indicators of
sustainability, demonstrated effectiveness, and grant-writing ability.
Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications.
