I think the origin is much simpler than you detail:
there are only four basic directions (cardinal points)
plus the up/ down axis (most 4 element systems have
a fifth element comprising the other 4).
Back: Forward: Left: Right: (N, S, E, W)
Divination seemed to start with arrow firing to find
direction for hunting (Stuart Cullin) ... the direction
described in mixtures of the Back/ Fore/ Left/ Right
categories.
An interesting comparison is wiv 4 elements with
the 4 logical categories (AND/ OR/ NOR/ NAND)
which also apply to electronic logic. This might say
something about the way our brains are wired.
