Actually if you look at http://www.caiso.com/SystemStatus.html, you will
see that peak demand is from about 5 to 7 PM, much of which is at night
(although days are of course getting longer now).

Reducing late-night demand is also helpful in allowing some power
storage to go on. Apparently they can pump water backwards in some of
the hydroelectric plants up north to use it the next day. California can
therefore sell power at night to balance some of what it is buying during
the day.
