Yeah, these are the new standard for backbones, but there aren't
very many of them, and they're VERY expensive (got one across the
street). To completely replace everything we'd need alot of them.
Note too that these are just backbones, you'd need thousands of
individual OC-192's to buildings/neighboorhoods.
I have the January LIGHTWAVE sitting in front of me, they're
talking 300 channels....

I was talking residential.
I have dealings with both these companies. But note these numbers
are for business service, and in downtown urban areas too. Nobody's
talking residential service here, and not many could afford $1000
a month either. Not exactly "free" phone calls.
I like competition.
