The valley formed by the Rhine River, running from the northwest corner of
Switzerland northward through France and Germany, is a region of medieval
castles, hillside vineyards, and the towering Black Forest. It's hard to
believe this charming stretch of Europe also has arguably the highest
concentration of biotech companies in the world and has yielded some of the
industry's biggest IPOs of the past year. And this biotech haven is growing
fast -- 25 to 30 new startups opened in 2000.
