This question actually touches on a deeper question, and it may
be what actually needs to be addressed -- the question of the
current cultural influences on future choices.

My basic perspective: If humans do not overcome some of these
culturally-ingrained biases towards stereotypes of male/female,
it will color what enhancements and improvements they choose in
the future. As an example, right now, we are taking intersex
children and forcibly rendering them into one of two established
gender schemas. That trend belies any possibility of greater
expression and freedom for voluntary enhancements. The firewalls
are strong, and they will affect transhumanist endeavors. Therefore,
we have a stake in minimizing them.
