I'd like to point out an alternate strategy that has worked well for me:
I filter the list, but rather than "kill" posts from characteristically low
quality posters, I "promote" posts from characteristically high quality
posters to an email folder separate from the one that collects all the
Extropy, SL4, WTA, Fabric of Reality, etc. messages that I group together.
That way I see many of the most interesting posts in my priority reading,
and if I have the time or interest I browse through the rest. You never
know when a person you would normally ignore is gonna go and say something
    interesting.
