The Mississippi River is a signifier of division, of hindrance, but
western dualism and progressivism cannot abide with leaving it as such,
and adds on attributions of transport, movement and centrality. Through
this re-attribution the dualistic hegemony is maintained, and hence
Mississippi is given a central position within the land as being tamed
good-nature unlike the less manageable and hence marginalized mountain
ranges that are expelled to the sides. This is a good example of how the
patriarchal order subverts the feminine symbols by placing them in a
dualistic framework and then rewarding compliance (making the river
"Miss"), while the male offspring Ouranos-style is rejected to the
periphery (but will of course in due time return to complete the cycle
    of heteronormative dominance).
