Yes, if you build out the Grid as described in an article by a microsoft
planner in the last issue appearing in:IEEE Task Force on Cluster
Computing

And fully develop the Total (Terrorist) Information Awareness and LIFELOG
systems as envisioned by DARPA

you might have a network capable of manufacturing a "made to order
reality".
The human factor that kind of screws up these senarios is that we tend to
be
paranoid, competitve little creatures and build 2 of everything.... so
world domination by an AI in the Matrix will likely be challenged say by
an equal or different AI in a matrix originating in say Euro/NorthAm/Sino
axis counterbalanced by a Chinese/Indian/Muslim flavored one created by
those who fear "Big Blue".
Humanity's Bipolarism is dangerous but not entirely useless.
