    On a smaller scale, this kind of reminds me of (from Ayn Rand's The
    Fountainhead) Howard Roark blowing up his own building, rather than letting
    his design be be compromised. Lots of people in America lived in hovels
    then (as they do now). Lots of people in America couldn't sit at certain
    lunch counters then (even at the oh-so-elegant Woolworth's, for pity's
    sake). And Roark is blowing up a skyscraper because of a few tchachkes.
