Agreed. However, in this case, Javien provides a couple of internal hops of
their own during the processing of Extropian List messages. Thus, in
addition to the direct sending and receiving by ISPs:

            (for example)
I sent the message at 11:55 local time.
I received it from the List at 13:17 local time.

We also see internal Javien hops during processing:

            (for example)
            Received: from tick.javien.com (javien2-3.spots.ab.ca [209.115.169.3])
                    by spool6.valueweb.net (8.12.9/8.9.2) with ESMTP id h4UHHNOF021532
                    for <mail@HarveyNewstrom.com>; Fri, 30 May 2003 13:17:27 -0400
            Received: (from majordom@localhost)
                    by tick.javien.com (8.11.6/8.11.2) id h4UFvhd06358
                    for extropians-outgoing; Fri, 30 May 2003 09:57:43 -0600

So the final timeline is clearly documented:
    ex
            11:55 sent message to ValueWeb
11:55 ValueWeb sent message to Extropians List
            11:?? <unknown internal processing>
11:57 Javien queues message for "extropians-outgoing"
13:17 Javien transmits message to my ISP at ValueWeb
13:17 My client downloads the message from ValueWeb to my workstation

The Javien output queue is taking an hour to an hour-and-a-half to deliver
outgoing Extropians-List messages. This same pattern appears on other
e-mails I am examining as well. During that period the server sent out 18
messages. If we have more than 300 subscribers, Javien would appear to be
delivering more than one e-mail per second to the Extropians List
    subscribers.
