Blogging is an activity getting more and more prevalent these days.
Blog servers are common and charge money in many cases, or earn
advertising money in others. A number of list members and other
extropians have blogs, myself included (Sado-Mikeyism:
http://mikeysoft.blogspot.com), as well as Greg Burch's 'Burchismo'
(http://gregburch.net/burchismo.html), and Amanda Phillips' "Milton
Waddams' Journal" at http://amanda42.livejournal.com/.
For those interested but unaware, there are a number of resources
available. Many host on their own servers or simply allow you to host
your own on your own site and just use their tools to generate it. For
example, I use Blogger's servers, while Greg only uses their tools.
Blogger has several options: blog*spot, Blogger Pro, and one or two
others. There is also LiveJournal.com, DeadJournal.com, zBlogger.com,
and a number of others.
If your blog host doesn't provide reader feedback comments, you can
sign up with http://www.blogextra.com and their BackBlog service (also
free), then just add a few snippets of code to your Blog template page
that refer to the backBlog servers.
Quality of service gets to be an issue. LiveJournal got so popular as a
free service that they had to go to a charge service, but gave paying
members x# of free codes to give to friends. It is now a stable paying
service. Others, like Blogger, are not so fortunate. Blogger in the
past week has be extremely unstable, slow, and unresponsive. I spent
most of today trying to fix my blog, and now I am likely to just chuck
it and migrate over to zBlogger, I am so peeved.
I did, however, manage to get reader comments from BackBlog running, so
until I move, and even after, I encourage people to cruise on over
there to read my rants. It has been a good steam release for me the
last several weeks, as you may have noticed my list traffic
declining... ;)
