I learned about this one on Friendster (again from a Hastings, this time Jo,
    yay Jo!)

There's a site called meetup.com that allows you to create a profile, declare
a city, and pick your interests. Then, when there are enough people with the
same interest in your city (>=5) you get to vote on a meeting date and a
venue. Of course you spoiled California people probably all live next to each
other, but for everyone else, the task of organizing a local gathering is
non-trivial, and this makes the task easier. Here are the meetups of interest
    that I've found so far...

    http://cryonics .meetup.com
    http://nanotech .meetup.com
    http://future .meetup.com
    http://atheists .meetup.com
    http://libertarian .meetup.com
    http://fsp .meetup.com
    http://anarchy .meetup.com

    ...and of course, http://friendster.meetup.com

Log on and see if maybe you're already living in the same town as a fellow
wierdo or two. This is exactly what I've been envisioning doing a couple of
years ago... luckily someone with more computer talent has actually gone ahead
    and done it!

PS: Speaking of Friendster, if you want to join Friendster as my friend (and
thereby be one hop away from all the other Extropy members who have already
done so) the link is http://www.friendster.com/join.jsp?invite=82426655600

Be warned that as Mike Butler found out, the Friendster admins are pretty
uptight about your portrait actually being a portrait of an actual adult human
being that is not naked, not a cartoon, and not copyrighted.
