I think years ago there was a proposed connection between a murder and a
Burt Reynolds flick featuring pouring gasoline on homeless drunks and
    setting them alight.

I'm not so sure though, Japanese anime often has tons of violence yet
    their society seems very peaceful.

I remember the PC game 'Red Alert II' had the winning side cheering
after a battle, which I found just a bit incongruous given that most
battles in the game are battles of annihilation where even the winner
can expect 80% casualties (all KIA's too). I'd expect exhausted
survivors falling to their knees and vomiting instead of letting out a
    hearty cheer.
