But you are ignoring the time frame.  Smoking takes at minimum decades 
to kill you, and you can quit before then.  (I did.)  And it's also a 
matter of individual choice...an important distinction in my mind.  
SARS, however, is never choosen, and appearantly takes effect within a 
couple of weeks, killing you (or not) within a month or so.  Quite 
different.
(Still, it is a useful perspective.)
