Just as an aside, I find ginseng (pills) useful in this regard. Their
effect on me is to raise my alertness, without making me nervous. But I
wonder what the causative mechanism is - does it raise my blood
pressure? So I use it sparingly.

A lot of work here is being done with herbs. For example, St. John's Wort
for mild depression, and Echinacea to ease or shorten cold symptoms. There
a number of herbs that calm - I once drank an elixer of them in tea form
that made me feel truly fearless :) Unlike the "ax" drugs, these don't
seem to have big side effects usually, and they are temporary, mild, don't
cause permanent changes in the brain. There is enough of a market for them
that most of the active ingredients have been identified and are often
    sold in pill form.
