It seems to me that regardless of whether we imagine our possible
downfall to be war, terrorist, epidemic or sheerest accident we need to
spread out.  So far we are analogous to a baby determined to never leave the
nursery.  That isn't exactly correct as many of us are pushing to leave the
nursery.  But it is close enough for government work.

I am not sure that humanity or transhumanity or intelligent penguins or happy
robots could outrun a determined weapns system; or a clever application of an
unintelligent weapons system. Berserkers or guided asteroidal colisions,
which is it. Realistically, when humanity gets souped-up technically, so it
cam live out at the moons of Jupiter, we will have a different
political-economic-religious(?) pattern in place. Perhaps one never so
short-sighted as what exists today, and always has existed.
