    The Diesel is excellent for *performance as a function
    of fuel use*. A small turboDiesel would be just the
    ticket for a *true* series hybrid (but not the parallel
    hybrids that are now being produced). Environmentalists
    may groan that a Diesel hybrid defeats the advantage
    of hybrid technology, but I would point out that in
    those applications where the motor runs at constant
    speed and load, there are many acceptable fuels that
    will spontaneously combust at Diesel-like compression
    ratios, such as peanut oil. spike
