Scientist 'clones panda' with help from rabbit and cat
By Catherine Armitage, China correspondent

a Beijing researcher's claim to have cloned an endangered giant panda
embryo, using the ovum of a rabbit and the uterus of a cat, has drawn
criticism from colleagues.

In a speech reported by the official state news agency Xinhua late last
year, Chen Dayuan claimed to be just one step away from cloning giant
pandas. His laboratory, operated by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has
already used the ovum of a rabbit to make a panda embryo, which was
implanted into the uterus of a cat. This was seen as a success, even though
the cat died two months later and the experiment has not been repeated.
