I have seen much *propaganda* coming from europe and the muslim world
claiming all sorts of things, things which are not in evidence. In
fact, there is much documentation online that CIA operatives in
Afghanistan in the 80's were *aware* of bin Laden, but did not deal
that much with him and did not, in fact, either train or funnel money
through him.

Bin Laden, as I've said, was a conduit for Saudi funding of the
Mujahedeen, and he saw US involvement as a threat and competitor to his
influence with the resistance. The only really substantial contribution
the US made was to enable the Mujahedeen to obtain more modern US
weapons rather than the 1950's castoffs and standard 3rd world Soviet
exports they had been using. Most of the $100 million a year of funding
we put into Afghanistan went to paying for Stinger missiles, and not
much else beyond secure communications equipment.
