I just finished watching this movie about twenty minutes ago and I'm still
speechless. I simply had to write (scratch that) google-cut-n-paste a great
review for you and punctuate it with an enthusiastic ME TOO!!

Russell Evermore

. . . The film is the story of a young Italian man/boy coming of age during
the reign of Mussolini in World War II. It is, however, a coming of age film
of incredible substance, intelligence, and beauty. Tornatore, you may
recall, was the writer and director of the Academy Award winning film,
Cinema Paradiso as well as the exquisite and highly original Legend of 1900
starring Tim Roth. Tornatore creates the most purely cinematic films one can
imagine. By this I mean interesting stories, featuring memorable characters
living out compelling situations, and all captured in some of the most
beautiful cinematography ever shot. Every set-up, every camera move, is
stunning. If there were no story, no dialogue, and no action, his films
would be wonderful to experience just for the pure art of his cinematic
vision. Malena is, therefore, not so much a movie as an experience . . .
