BIOLOGY: the genome pipeline

After reading about the honey bee, I got curious as to
the status of various genomes:

yeast [2 strains S. cerevisiae & S. pombe] (complete)
nematode [C. elegans] (complete)
fruit fly [Drosophila] (complete)
Arabidopsis thaliana [a mustard family plant] (complete)
human: should be done April 2003, largely complete now
mouse: done (essentially complete in rough form)
rat: nearly done (essentially complete in rough form)
pufferfish [Fugu rubripes] (95% sequenced)
sea squirt [Ciona intestinalis] - complete
rice (Indian & Japanese variants) - complete
zebrafish [Danio rerio] - in progress
African frog (Xenopus tropicalis) - in progress

Queued:
Cow [Bos taurus]
Dog [Canis familiaris]
Oxytricha [oxytricha trifallax]
Chimpanze [Pan troglodytes]
Chicken [Gallus gallus]
Honey bee [Apis mellifera]
Sea urchin [Strongylocentrotus purpuratus]

An asian consortium is pushing "The Chimpanzee Genome Project"
(see Watanabe et al). And a strange collaboration between
the Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences and the Chinese
Academy of Science is working on the pig genome (Google:
The Pig Genome Sequencing Project).

Finally, an interesting statistic from the DOE JGI. Last
month (Dec 2002), they sequenced ~1.34 *BILLION* bases of DNA.
And they aren't even the largest sequencing center -- MIT
Whitehead, Sanger, and perhaps WashU may all have greater
capacity.

May we live in interesting times!
Robert
