help me find my new computer

I've got $1400 (my bonus) set aside to buy a newer computer.
Having paid little attention to the market in the last few years,
I have little sense of my options.

Ideally, I want a portable Macintosh with color, internal modem,
and the ability to install later an internal CD player and external
monitor and keyboard.
I'm aware that I can't get all that (new) at my price.

I will be glad of any advice.
