They are bushlike structures consisting of fractally branching arms. I
know at least two books where they occur beside Mind Chiuldren, both sf:
_Rocheworld_ by Robert Forward (the solar sail ship is largely run by the
'Christmas Bush', a bushrobot signalling internally and externally using
multicolored laser light) and _The Turing Option_ by Harrison and Minsky
('Sven' is a 'society of mind' AI housed in a bush robot).

Have anybody looked at how to actually build them? Those joints are
probably troublesome.
