Beside the obvious usefulness of smart or independent programs (just imagine having a good secretary for all your projects!) and research interest, I think the greatest benefit of AI would be to have a different perspective. An AI would not be a human, and even if there might be some similarities due to programming or design criteria it would develop its own very different worldview. I think this would benefit us tremendously, as a diversity of viewpoints tends to make solving problems easier and question many assumptions taken for granted
